Fishing in the Vuoggatjålme area

You need an angler's licence for this area, available in almost every shop and holiday-village in the neighbourhood. Choose between one, three or seven days or even the whole year if you want to. Together with the licence goes a map which shows where you are allowed to fish.

In the Vuoggatjålme area you'll find "only" alpine char and salmon trout, but these delicious fishes are a real challenge for anglers.

Even though there is plenty of fish in most of the lakes and rivers nearby, it can by a trying job to learn how to tease them to bite.

Small spinners like Aglia, Mepps or Droppen with silver or copper blinkers should be tried in various depths and with various speeds - this is usually the safest way to do it.

When using flies, choose the small, quiet ones that resemble the insects of our area, and offer them with great finesse when the fish isn't in the mood.

Fishing-rods and worms are quite all right for small lakes, but also here small hooks usually are more reliable.

The easiest way to go fishing is hiring a boat in Vuoggatjålmejaure so you can reach some of the banks out in the lake. Depth may vary, but 3-15 feet (1-5 m) is fine. On our map for ice-fishing (through drilled holes) these places are marked with blue. Also the red spots (marking weak ice) are often good, because the water is running there. Inlet and outlet are usually good places, so don't miss a visit upstream on Sildutjåkkå. You can use the boat 3 km up from the lake (ask at reception for a special map for the river) to an open cottage. Further up you can walk beside the river and try your luck in the falls, holes and shoal water. About 500 m upstream the cottage there is a bridge over the river. If you cross the bridge over to the eastern side you will reach a small lake (1 km above the bridge). A narrow, but deep channel connects the lake with the river. In summer, when the river is high of muddy melt-water from the glaciers, the fish swim into this lake and stay there. Why not try to catch some and grill them over an open fire ?

Arraluokta is a part of Vuoggatjålmejaure. The road to Vuoggatjålme runs over a culvert, big enough to pass through with a boat. This bay is very deep, so you had better to fish near the banks. One special advantage with this bay is that however strong the wind, you'll always find a calm place to rest.
Leave the boat near the outflow of Arrajaurejåkkå and take a nice walk via Kroksjön and Rundsjön to Arrajaure. Try to fish both in brooks and lakes.

If you don't want to hire a boat you can walk from Vuoggatjålme to Lillsjön. It's not far to this idyllic lake, about 1,5 km.

There is plenty of salmon trout in lake Skidnakjaure, 7 km one way - a day's trip. If you are lucky you may even catch an alpine char, some of them weighing up to 3 pounds (1,5 kg). So don't forget your landing net.

The area around the old path to Guijaure west of Vuoggatjålme offers you endless varieties: you can fish in small lakes, waterfalls, brooks - both in the birch forests and on bare mountains. Some of the lakes contain real giants weighing several kilos. It's not easy to catch them, but you can't win if you don't try...
