There are several paths in the neighbourhood. You can walk through the birch forest and reach bare mountain or start above the trees where the mileswide views are all around you. You can bring your tent for a 100 km walk in a week or just take a 500 metres walk to a peaceful restingplace near a wild little brook. You can bring your fishing rod or look for historical sites; the mountain area might look untouched by human feet, but if you look carefully you will find tracks more than 1000 years old.
1.
"Barkslingan" (the bark track) and "Utsikten" (viewpoint)
After arrival the first thing to do here, is to be getting known with the
surrounding area. The easiest way is to follow the wellmarked barktrack and make
a detour up to the viewpoint. On your way you may see blue-headed wagtails,
field fares, bramblings, redpolls, all the characteristic birds, different kinds
of wading birds, and perhaps willow grouse. High above there are eagles and
roughlegged buzzards. Interesting flowers are fragrant gymnadenia, butterwort,
"lappspira" (Laplander's sceptre) and "skogsnäva" (wood
beak), maybe you even find "Kung Karls spira" (King Charles' sceptre).
From "Utsikten" you have a wonderful outlook over Vuoggatjålme and
the mountains behind.
2.
Lillsjön (the little lake)
Make a detour from "Barkslingan" to Lillsjön, an idyllic lake.
The 1,5 km path is easy.
3.
Tjidtjak
Visiting Lapland without hiking on the bare mountains is not a real visit.
The easiest way from Vuoggatjålme is to follow the direction posts to "Tjidtjak".
After about 3 km, here and there very near the beautiful Raudojåkkå (small
river), you'll arrive to a cottage just below the tree limit. This cottage is
open for everyone and there is a nice place to sit and make a fire outside of
it. You can fetch water from a brook north of the cottage. Another 2-300 metres
north you reach the bare mountain, the old path is marked by stones with red
marks. Follow it to the top of "Tjidtjak" if you want to (about 12 km
one way). Don't be afraid to leave the path and take a look at Raudojåkkå,
which on it's way from the high mountain has many beautiful falls and sometimes
exquisite holes in the rocks, inviting you to a refreshing bath in crystal clear
and cold water on a warm day.
4.
Skidnak
From "Barkslingan" there is an easy path to the mountain lake
Skidnak, about 7 km from Vuoggatjålme. The path runs over bog, so you'd better
bring your rubber boots. The lake is on 2.040 feet above sea level (679 m.ö.h.)
just underneath the mountain Daunastjårro. Many visitors in Vuoggatjålme has
caught his first alpine char here. Angler's licences are available at the
reception desk in Vuoggatjålme.
5.
Örnberget... and further
Vuoggatjålme is the starting point of the marked path through
Sieldutvagge to Jurunjaure and further to Mavas (Laplanders' summer camp,
anglers' camp). Some 1 km north of Vuoggatjålme there is a bridge over Raudojåkkå
river and then you walk on top of a flat hill (easy, planked path) another 5 km
to the next water-crossing. This river brings down water from several small
lakes between Skaptavare and Tjidtjak. On the other side of the bridge you find
an old mountain cottage, a souvenir from those times when agriculture was common
further north than today.
If you hike together with friends and your legs are in good condition, you
don't need to go back the same way. Just continue north another 3 km to a bridge
over Sieldutjåkkå on your left hand. There is a path running south-south-west
towards the outlet of lake Tjaktjaure. Let your friends start from the parking
lot there, so you can take their car and drive home.
Don't forget to get the car-keys !
6.
Stiepaltjåkkå
A nice view over Vuoggatjålme and lake Sädvajaure with the near
mountains is offered from Stiepaltjåkkå, a 2.000 feet high (680 m.ö.h.)
mountain near the Silver road a few km south of the Arctic Circle. Two paths run
up to the top, one from Lillviken and the other from a parking lot 1 km south of
the Arctic Circle. The incline is quite heavy, about 600 feet or 200 m. The path
leads through varying birch woods with single mighty pines. On the top the bare
rock can be seen. Interesting mountain flora in the crevices, and on the slopes
there is both rich fauna and flora, among others pine grosbeak.
7.
Guoletisjaure - Jurun bridge
Almost 30 km from Vuoggatjålme along the Silver road to Norway you find a
mountain-lake called Guoletisjaure, 2.130 feet (709 m.ö.h.) near the highest
point of the road. From the lay-by north of the road a path leads you to Jurun
bridge after 7 km. The path is easy, without too heavy incline. the first 5 km
are on bare mountain, then you go down to Jurunjaure through open birch forest.
Beside the bridge you find an open cottage, and the river makes wonderful falls
to look at and fish in.
If you cross the river heading north for Mavas, you'll come to the path
from Vuoggatjålme after about 600 metres (see point 5). Walking further you
reach the view of lake Ikesjaure after a few kilometres, this is the spring-lake
of "Skellefteälven" (400 km river heading to the east coast of
Sweden). Ikesjaure is surrounded by steep frontier mountains towards Norway,
most imposing is perhaps Årjep Saulo with 5.145 feet above the sea (1.715 mö.h.).
8.
The Norwegian Border Area
Where the Silver road passes the highest point an impressing world of
mountains rises on both sides of the road. There are small easy tops like Maddåive
and Själbmatjåkkå, and north of the road you can climb the real border
mountains passing Skärrimvagge. You won't find any marked paths here.
9. Norway

When the weather is bad in Sweden, it's usually better on the Norwegian side because of the mountains. Passing the beautiful Junkerdalen and if you are interested in flowers; make a stop at Saltdal Turistsenter (just after you reached the E 6) and walk up into Junkerdalsura where you will find many specialities. We also recommend a day's trip (days are long north of the Arctic Circle......) north to Bodö city (190 km one way) and Saltstraumen (one of the world's largest maelstroms), or south to Grönli cave and Svartisen glacier. When you're heading south on the E 6, you reach Polarsirkelsentret (Arctic Circle Center). Not far from that you find a path towards the old silver mine at Nasafjäll, which is almost on the border. Especially in August when the snow has melted, this is a nice excursion for a day (about 8 km one way).
